Most biographical articles in the ADB are on one person only. There are some articles, however, with more than one subject. Advantages sometimes accrue from writing one article on a number of people, usually members of the one family (parents and children, husbands and wives, or siblings), and, occasionally, people connected in other ways, such as business partners.

Major Subjects of an Article
Where an article is equally the entry on a number of people, called major subjects, their names appear in large capital letters at the beginning of the text. The article title that appears on the Biography page is that of the person selected from a browse or results list, and is not necessarily the first named person in the text.
Minor Subjects of an Article
An article on a major subject will sometimes include biographical material on another person (usually a family member) whose name appears in small capitals. This minor subject can be found through the browse and search functions, but it must be remembered that it is necessary to read the article on the major subject to find material on the minor subject.
